Artist Biographies

Lady In Green ALICE WILLIAMS, FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH

At first glance, one might categorize the art of Alice Williams as post-impressionist, but it would be unfair to confine her career to one genre. True, she is interested in color and light as Bonnard and Vuillard were, but in addition, she is just as fascinated by good composition and canvas narrative. Her paintings show the influence of having grown up surrounded by fine art. Living and painting in Europe for five years, she had the opportunity to study the masters as she frequented museums, especially the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay, which were within walking distance of her Paris home. She also spent years studying under such well-known painters as Chatov, Shank, Kinstler and portraitist Green. A prolific painter, her brushstrokes denote the bravado of a master and her experience shows. Her remarkable versatility of subject matter, her use of dynamic color and the beautiful effect of chiaroscuro present in her paintings are just a few of the many qualities that make her easily one of the most recognizable and sought after painters in America today.

Veronica ClarkVERONICA CLARK

New works by North Carolina artist, Veronica Clark will be exhibited in a one-woman show at the Shain Gallery.  The exhibit will be on view from September 19 through October 2, 2008.

Born in Sussex and growing up in the English countryside, Veronica has lived and studied in London, Paris and Florence.  Since 1981, she has resided in the Carolinas.  Most recently she spends time between Charlotte and a family farm in Chester, SC where her studio overlooks fields with cows which are often the subject of her paintings.  Horses, dogs, chickens and geese also provide much inspiration, as do the animals she meets on her travels.

Veronica completed two weeks at the American Academy of Equine Art in Lexington, Kentucky, studying under Lesley Humphrey. She has also attended workshops with George Strickland, Scott Burdick, Steve Early and Dawn Emerson.

Veronica has exhibited and won awards in local and regional shows, with work in collections across the United States and in Europe.  Recently, Veronica had her work accepted in the American Academy of Equine Art, a juried show in Lexington Kentucky, and in 2008, she was the official artist for Charlotte’s Queens Cup Steeplechase.

She was chosen 2005 Emerging Artist by Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine, and selected to exhibit at 2007 Florence Biennale, Florence Italy. Connie Winters has emerged as a strong influence on the art scene in the Southeastern United States. Citing the work of classic French Impressionists as an ongoing source of inspiration in her own artwork, Winters naturally gravitates to France, particularly the rural regions of Provence and Dordogne, as locations for her landscapes.
Winters travels to France each year, crediting the provincial lifestyle she experiences there with giving her a renewed sense of spirituality and desire to create her detailed and vibrant landscapes.
